Space Un is pleased to present The Clearing, a group exhibition curated by writer and curator Ekow Eshun, bringing together contemporary artists from across the African diaspora. Centered on painting, the exhibition explores the memory and imagination of Black communities, creating a contemplative space that reflects on healing, belonging, and creative resistance.

Nengi Omuku
Born 1987 in Warri, Nigeria. Lives and works between Lagos and London. Omuku works with oil on sanyan—a traditional Yoruba wild-silk textile—to explore identity, belonging, and the psyche. Her dream-like compositions bridge Nigerian visual heritage and contemporary diasporic narratives.
Sola Olulode
Born 1996 in London. Lives and works in South London.
British-Nigerian artist Sola Olulode creates batik-dyed and hand-painted canvases that centre Black queer womxn and non-binary identities. Her tactile works celebrate intimacy, joy, and softness within Black communities.
Okiki Akinfe
Born 1999. Lives and works in London.
Okiki Akinfe explores identity and belonging through a framework she calls “The Black Lens,” shifting perspective from the white gaze to the Black gaze. Her vivid compositions blend history, stereotype, and personal narrative.
Arthur Timothy
Born 1957 in Accra, Ghana. Lives and works in Bath and London.
An architect and painter, Arthur Timothy’s large-scale oil paintings are rooted in memory and family photographs. Drawing on his experience between Ghana, Sierra Leone, and the UK, his practice examines the intersections of personal history, migration, and cultural identity.
Kwesi Botchway
Born 1994 in Accra, Ghana. Lives and works in Accra and Brussels.
Kwesi Botchway’s luminous portraits celebrate Black beauty, strength, and futurity. Founder of the WorldFaze studio in Accra, his work reimagines classical portraiture through an African lens, merging European technique with West African color sensibility.
Nengi Omuku（ネンギ・オムク）
1987年ナイジェリア・ワリ生まれ。ラゴスとロンドンを拠点に活動。ナイジェリアの伝統布「サンヤンシルク」に油彩を施し、身体の記憶、夢、そして個人と共同体の関係を詩的に描き出す。
Sola Olulode（ソラ・オルローデ）
1996年ロンドン生まれ、同地を拠点に活動。
バティック染色を用いた温かな色彩の作品で、ブラック・クィア・コミュニティの親密さと優しさを祝福する。
Okiki Akinfe（オキキ・アキンフェ）
1999年生まれ、ロンドンを拠点に活動。
「ブラックレンズ」という視点を通して、黒人の経験や歴史、そしてアイデンティティの物語を再構築する。
Arthur Timothy（アーサー・ティモシー）
1957年ガーナ・アクラ生まれ。バースとロンドンを拠点に活動。建築家としての経歴を持ち、絵画作品では記憶、移民、そして帰属意識をテーマに風景と人間の関係を探求する。
Kwesi Botchway（クウェシ・ボッチウェイ）

About the Curator — Ekow Eshun
Ekow Eshun is a London-based curator, writer, and cultural critic, internationally recognized for his work on the history, culture, and visual art of the African diaspora. He has curated exhibitions at major institutions including the Barbican Centre, Serpentine Gallery, and Tate Britain, and is the author of In the Black Fantastic (Tate Publishing, 2022). His writing appears in the BBC, The Guardian, and leading art publications. Eshun’s work examines race, identity, and the imagination, exploring the intersections between contemporary art and society.

ロンドンを拠点に活動するキュレーター、作家、文化批評家。アフリカ系ディアスポラの歴史や文化、美術に関する国際的な展覧会や出版で知られ、バービカン・センター（ロンドン）、サーペンタイン・ギャラリー（ロンドン）、テート・ブリテン（ロンドン）など主要美術館で企画を手がける。著書に In the Black Fantastic（テート出版、2022年）などがあり、BBCや主要美術誌にも寄稿。人種、アイデンティティ、想像力をテーマに、現代美術と社会の接点を探求している。
